See Saw

So, after several years, I've gotten back into the Saw franchise, and dragged Bahamute along with me.

The new movie is coming out this month, continuing the grand tradition of an October Saw release. I've seen a lot of the films, and I own all of them in a multi-pack (including the *gasp* mis-named 7th film, The Final Chapter). But I just never finished watching them.

The first movie was written and directed by my favorite 2000-teens movie team, James Wan and Leigh Whannell. You may remember their other successes, like Insidious, The Conjuring, Lights Out, and...AQUAMAN?!

I promise, I was just as shocked as you are.

So...Back to the Gorn.

Saw, for anyone who might not have seen it SPOILERS was originally hailed for it's well-executed twists, including a massive red hearring in the form of Michael Emerson's Zep. Zep is presented as the villain for the entirety of the film, only for Tobin Bell to stop impersonating a dead body at the last second. SAFE. It was a twist of 6th Sense proportions, in that nobody knew there was going to be a twist beforehand.

The performance by Cary Elwes is fantastic, the gore is mostly implied, and the script itself is thought provoking and chilling. As for how they got seven more movies (including the misnamed penultimate final chapter) I'm not sure. I plan on watching the rest of them, since I own them anyway. So stay tuned for that.

Also, am I the only one who sees some design similarities between the Billy puppet and the Red-Faced Demon in Insidious?

I get it, same director, etc, but the cut of the face, especially the nose and the hairstyle...I dunno.

Back to Saw proper: it's not my favorite James Wan film (that's Insidious), but it's a solid horror movie. A 7/10 and a great Halloween watch.

Blogtober IT Spot: Release date mania!

It's official; IT Chapter 2 will release 9/6/2019. Start the countdown!

In other news, Burger King wants Russia to ban IT. Why? Because they're worried that Pennywise will make people think of Ronald McDonald, and they'll go to McDoanlds.

Sorry to break it to you guys, but that ship has sailed.

Not like Russia's a crucial market, what with the record breaking box office and all, but wow.

It's generational, #1

So, for any readers who don't t know me personally, I'm married, sans kids (for now). I have several friends with kids in elementary and middle school. The oldest of these (we'll call her Ruby Gloom, because that show is the shit) is into horror, much like her parents, myself, and several of our friends.

Recently, Ruby thought she was ready to watch The Mist, after seeing a Youtube review. Spoilers: she was not.

I haven't even seen it, and I've read the story!

Me, hearing Mama Gloom relate this story, and knowing how Ruby usually glommed onto everything scary, couldn't let that go. "How about you and Ruby come over and we watch A Nightmare on Elm Street? I was her age when I saw that, and it's a lot less intense."

Mama Gloom agreed, having seen the film at a similar age and maturity. We agreed to keep Jaws on reserve, as it's even less intense, and Ruby was a fan of Jurassic Park.

Again: less intense.

It's strange how these things go in cycles. NOES is my favorite all time horror movie. One I consider very scary. One that is about a child murdered (and maaaaaybe molester, opinions are split). And yet, one I consider more appropriate than The Mist.

Granted, the Mist has a lot more in-your-face monsters right up front (at least in the book). NOES only has one, which Ruby is apparently already aware of.

Still the man of your dreams, after all these years.

And while I do think Ruby can handle this, I also think it's going to end up scarier for her in the long run. There is a lot of gore, and while the deaths are limited, they are intense.

The things in the Mist are tough, but can be killed. Freddy is eternal. And while the films vary in both quality and level of scariness, overall Freddy is one of the scariest monsters out there. And Ruby doesn't know how many of her favorites drew inspiration from him. He warped reality and got stronger as people knew him, much like Slenderman. He is strongly associated with kids, like Freddy Fazbear. Like Jeff the Killer he...

...Um...

Nope, that's a bridge too far. Jeff is a crappy character, and not worth my time or word count.

Well, time to go pass along my demons to the next generation!

Whelp, the deed is done. And Ruby seemed to really enjoy the movie. Calling it 'intense'. There's talk of more movie nights. Success!
