Halloweekend

So, this is the big party weekend of the year. Or in my case the big work on Saturday and hang out with family while trying to find time for Stranger Things Season 2 weekend of the year. My annual Halloween movie night had to be pushed back to the weekend after. A decision I loath, but it's better than no viewing party at all.

Frankly, this has been a less than stellar October for me. Most of my friends were occupied all month long by a play I wasn't in (I'm in a different play), making get-togethers all but impossible. So far I've squeezed in a viewing of Hocus Pocus with some friends who hadn't seen it before.

I know!

I've also finished re-watching American Horror Story: Freak Show with my husband, who has been very understanding during the month. He's generally lukewarm to horror, as he doesn't get scared.

 There was this one time, however...

But he's willing to watch stuff with a genuinely good story. So things like AHS, Krampus, Get Out, and the like get a pass.

That still leaves me alone when it comes to sagas and cheese fests. Who will sit with me and watch the Puppet Master series? Or lesser classics like Pumpkinhead and Wishmaster? Or the godawful not-even-really-a-horror-movie The Last Shark?

Luckily, with Rifftrax, you're never alone.

I'm sad I haven't been able to properly celebrate and enjoy this Halloween season. Thank goodness for these blogs. And a special shout-out to my over 800 (!) followers on the Amino Horror App. It's nice to know I'm not shouting into the void, or worse, just annoying friends and family.

Anyway, for those of you who can, have fun this weekend. I'll be back next week for the last of the thrills.

The Twisted Ones (Spoiler free)

So, at long last, my hotly awaited review of The Twisted Ones.

*cricket noise*

I reviewed the first FNAF book, The Silver Eyes a while back. It was...fine. At worst, it was a mediocre Goosebumps novel, and at best, it was a better Goosebumps novel.

Not a lot of blood, but it had a few scares (very few), and characters that had more dimensionality than wet carboard. Most importantly, it fleshed out some of the lore of FNAF, which was all I really wanted.

Enter The Twisted ones, the middle of the trilogy (as Scott Cawthon has stated). Charlie, the survivor girl, is dealing with the fallout from book 1, while new murders crop up.

This book is an improvement on The Silver eyes. There's more deaths, more gruesome imagery, and several new twists that are enjoyable to read.

The book does end on a cliffhanger, though, with nothing really tied up at the end. Cawthon has stated there is a third book in the works, but this book suffers a lot for not tying up anything. I get that a trilogy midpoint is there to set up the third installment, but you've got to tie up SOME things, or it just feels like a 'screw you' to the audience.

No word at this time on when the third book will be published, or even it's title. I'm sure I'll pick it up (this installment was only $5, and worth at least that), but I just wish there were any answers in this one, and not just a lot of set ups.

It is very FNAF to leave us with more questions, though...

So, another night exposing a young woman to horror movies is on the horizon. Hooray!

For this viewing, we're going to have Ruby Gloom watch the original Poltergeist.

Damn you for existing this making the need to clarify.

Ruby enjoyed Nightmare on Elm Street, but her attention wavered in spots. Poltergeist is a bit more fast-paced, so I think she'll enjoy it more. Plus she's a Spielberg fan.

So Poltergeist was a marked improvement for Ruby. She said it was scarier, and she seemed more interested. I get it, there's other kids, and the story is more straight forward. Plus the effects are gory, and very up front.

There were a few moments we had to stop and explain: At the beginning I jumped in and advised about the 'end of the broadcast day' announcement and subsequent static. We also had to advise that, no, it was NOT good CGI, since there was no CGI (or very limited) in 1982.

There were a few moments that the adults traded looks: the face tearing off, the attempted rape of Diane by the poltergeist, and the real skeletons coming out of the ground. Ruby was freaked out, but took everything in stride. We ended the night watching some funny dog compilations, and discussing what she thought about the movie.

I'd call this another success.
