Losing Fantasy

Sir Terry Pratchett died today.

(from here)

For anyone who doesn't know, he was the author of over 40 books, many in the Discworld series, a epic comedic fantasy. It's one of my favorite series (though I haven't read every book yet).

He released the last book, Raising Steam, last summer. It's the third part of a trilogy about my favorite character in the series, Moist Von Lipwig (pronounced Lip-Vig). I haven't read it yet, as I only finished re-reading a related, but not part of the trilogy book, Thud!

It's a complex series.

There's another book that's supposed to come out this autumn, but I have no idea if that's still happening. It's probably close to being finished, if not done already, so we may get one last volume.

This has been a trying week, between work and the death of two of my favorite old guys. The players exit, but the fantasy remains. It's just a little more paint on cardboard than sculpted set.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a spinning disc on four elephants on a giant turtle to think about.

Finally!

I caught up on every episode of The Walking Dead that's come out so far.

Accurate

I know it's no 'finishing editing the manuscript' or even 'clean the hose', but it's something I've been trying to do. I'm still mid-comic (as well as being mid a thousand other books), but it's nice to meet a goal.

Even more accurate

Now I'm free to hit up some other things...possibly even Breaking Bad. But first, a tvtropes binge, now that the spoilers are concluded.

Haikus

I see spots on dots
Dog sleeps in my robe all day
I need to get up

---------------------------

A tyrant, a doctor
Will this one see it? This time?
Will they know at last?

---------------------------

Scrubbing the old counter
Leading the ill and the blind
Wagging tails, furry hearts

---------------------------

A blind eye blazes
Blue eyes entranced with the light
Smaller windows flame

--------------------------

Slender silver weave
Glints of light and loving hands
Work and suffering

---------------------------

Ice shards from the sky
Bitter pines and twisted branch
Fire cannot melt me

Pup-date

So, I haven't been blogging as much lately. You may blame Carly.

^^ This bitch

Even now, I'm typing with one hand while my lap and left hand are occupied. Good thing I'm not a dude, or that sent ace would seem suspicious!

You're all perverts.

She's learning. There's (more) pee on the pads, less (but not no) nibbling, and less crying in her crate. She's growing on hubby and I. Her little puppy noises are super cute, and she's learning to give kisses. It's going well.

So, in the time I find to write, I edit my manuscript. Blogging is falling away a bit, at least until she's older. Or until I get a killer idea.

Or if she moves slightly.

"Weird scenes inside the Goldmine"*

So, I finally watched 'This is the End.'

All in all, I enjoyed it very much. Watching Aziz Ansari get kicked into a giant hell pit by Kevin Hart was hilarious, even though I like both comedians.

I've been catching up on a lot of great movies lately: The Grand Budapest Hotel, Birdman, and (almost) Big Hero 6 (I fell asleep).

Though I will quote "Hairy Baby" at my pets.

I like seeing good new movies amid the sea of Scary Movie   or the latest teenager saving the Dystopian future from evil adults. It's great to know there are still new ways of telling old ideas.

It's been happening in TV as well: Parks and Rec breaks away from traditional sitcom storylines. No, the perfect couple didn't break up just to create drama, they got married and had realistic arguments NOT based on misunderstandings that could be solved in 2 seconds if people talked. NO the villains on Avatar the Last Airbender weren't fooled by simple masks or cheap gimmicks. They were smart...way too smart...

Though Legend of Korra dabbled in crazy antics and guest stars, as pictured above.

It's just awesome.

Tears

Leonard Nimoy died today.

The world lost a multi-talented man. Granted, I know him best as my favorite Star Trek character, Spock, as did many. I've written before about how important Spock is to me.

What can I say? He was 83. His illness was known, at least to him. I don't know if it was publicized before.  My husband knew he was in hospital about a week ago, but I missed that news (Hubby is out getting me McD's to cheer me up. I love my husband).

Spock the character is still alive in Zachary Quinto. We even had a lovely send off for him in the latest Star Trek film. I shouldn't be this sad. I never met the man. I'd learned from the ideals he held. There wasn't anything else to glean.

Egon is dead. Spock is dead.  Brent Spiner is getting older.  I'm losing my stoic icons.

What do I say? Not live long and prosper. He did that.

There's something better. A Hebrew proverb.  "Say not in grief 'he is no more' but in thankfulness that he was."

Another saying, for those of us not trekking the final frontier. "God is closest to those with broken hearts."

I feel terrible.

Busy, very busy

I was so consumed by the puppy, now named Carly, yesterday that I didn't have time to write a proper blog! :(

So, here's some funny stuff until I can get more pics of her.

I am typing 1 handed because a 6 week old dalmatian puppy is asleep on my lap. This will be a short blog.

See?

No name yet, but Xena is a contender. More info as it develops.
It's aliiiiive!

Overdoing it

I mentioned before how I'm trying to get through the backlog of Walking Dead episodes.Yesterday I marathoned four episodes in a row. I sat in my living room, thinking about how sad I would be during a zombie apocalypse, losing friends, family home, and due to one of the B-Plots of the episode, my books.

Then I had a nightmare where some sort of massive earthquake happened, and roving bandits came to take my books.

Not even take; they were going to pay for the books. But many of my collection are from stores long-closed and places I'll never go again. They weren't just taking my books; they were taking my happy memories too.

Incredibly useful image! Hooray!

When I woke up it all seemed a lot sillier than it did in the dream where I begged them not to take my books (or at least to spo cutting up the jackets). Today I'm going to stick to Friends and lighter fare while I clean the house. Too much doom and gloom isn't good for me.
