Running on empty

So, I'm all caught up on Scooby Apocalypse, I've made a serious dent in my backlog of Ghostbusters comics, and I started Steven Universe season 2. But I've also been gearing up for a friend's wedding, recovering from a jam-packed weekend of volunteer work and zoo-going, and just general tiredness. I haven't finished the chapter of IT for the next IT spot either, and there's no pop culture news that I feel qualified or compelled to discuss.

Thanks for bearing with me. Here's some funny 'off brand' photos.

The Dark Tower (spoiler free)

So, I saw The Dark Tower yesterday.

Honestly, if this movie came out any other time, IE not a month before the IT movie, I'd have been a lot more into it overall. It's not a bad film, and there are lots of fun easter eggs for King fans.

But this isn't the film I had hoped for; it's not an adaptation of the first book. It's not the introduction to a sprawling 8-book long epic. It's a capper to what came before. And for what it is, that's fine.

If you like the Gunslinger, and keep the fact that this is technically a sequel to the books in mind, you'll enjoy the references, and the performances of Elba and McConaghey. Just don't expect more than the bare bones of the story, with some alterations, and you'll be fine.

I may put out a more spoiler-heavy review in the future, once I've seen it again, reread the books, or had time for this to settle. But overall, it's fine.

Just fine.

Rick and Morty Mondays: Pickle Rick!

So, the highly anticipated Pickle Rick episode of Rick and Morty aired last night, and ooh-wee! It was a barnstormer.

The Rick and Morty subreddit had already made a bunch of pickle posts in anticipation:

The real standout moments of the episode were Rick's violent rat assault, Danny Trejo as Jarguar:

And Susan Sarandon's Dr. Wong dissecting the situation (spoilers!)

All in all, a great episode, but not one that deserved as much hype as the thought of a man turning himself into a pickle apparently generated in the fandom.
