In winter, people at my university take children's clothing items, dip them in water and hold them in place until they freeze like this all over campus. As the weather warms up the "invisible children" slowly melt to the ground.

Bugs

I'm sitting here on my day off, enjoying classic Looney Toons, thanks to my family. I forgot how much I love Bugs Bunny. The brilliance! The wit! Ah, how I've missed Daffy and Elmer and Yosemite Sam.

In any other cartoon, that would look stupid.

This is a good day. So good, I'm gonna watch and enjoy instead of blogging about it. That's for another time.

Happy Birthday to me

Today I am twenty eight years old. I could write a mopey blog about how my book isn't published (or even in it's final form. Almost, but not quite). I could write an exciting blog detailing how many things I have done in my life (marrying my true love, getting a BA in English). But I'm not. My blog already talks about my failures and my triumphs. Cramming that all into one post would be boring.

It *knew* what scared you

Short version: There is a Poltergeist reboot coming out this year. The trailer just came out. I am not very pleased.

I've already talked about how much I dislike the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot, and how I was underwhelmed by The Evil Dead re-sequel-boot. This is another in the long line of horror reboot/cash grabs that may have good intentions but fail at their basic aim: scaring us.

Here's the original trailer and the reboot trailer, for comparison:

Not everything is awful here. So first, the changes I like:

• The family isn't well off, and the house is a fixer upper rather than a brand-new home in an up-and-coming suburb. In the 80s it made sense to have a upwardly-mobile, well off family in a growing area. With the current economy this will be a better match for the every man. Making people emotionally connect is crucial to making any movie work, and the Freelings were very relatable in the original. I'm glad to see they understand this was one of the reasons why. 
• The effects look better in some scenes. I liked the brief shot of the tree and Robbie 2.0 especially.
• The casting of Sam Rockwell as Steven Freeling 2.0. He's a fine actor, and I enjoy his performance every time I see him.

And Nite-Owl can't do all these roles.

The things I take issue with:

• Showing the clown moving. The clown was a pivotal scare of the original. They spent the entire movie setting it up. And even though we knew it would be waiting on top of the bed, it was still terrifying. They've eliminated the suspense. So many trailers show too much, and this one is no exception. The design of the clown is fine, but the original still works better for me.

Plus the doll malfunctioned and almost killed the child actor. THERE'S a convincing performance!

• The re-naming of all the main characters. A minor point, but this isn't like Evil Dead where it was an original(ish) story, with new(ish) characters. These characters are clearly Steven, Robbie, Diane, Dana, and Carol-Anne Freeling. Is it really so much better to hear screams of "MADDIE!" rather than "CAROL-ANNE!"? The only major cast change that would necessitate a name change seems to be...
• Getting rid of Tangina Baron and replacing her with a man. Maybe this was done to avoid similarity to Insidious's Elise. But it's still annoying. Let there be more than two important women in this movie!
• The many, many, many jump scares. This is a problem with modern horror movies in general, but seeing them attached to a property I hold so close to my heart hurts. It's the same thing that ruined A Nightmare on Elm Street 2010 for me. And the marketing. And the writing. And the plot. And the effects. And the acting.

Aside from a trying-his-hardest performance by Jackie Earle Haley.

The international trailer has a better feel, and less jump scares (still too many, but less). I'm willing to give this film a shot, but I'm skeptical it can be a worthy remake. If it's a passable movie, that'll be something.

I had a (bad) dream

You know those stress dreams I complain about having, and the normal nightmares I wasn't getting (until extremely recently)? Here's two of them!

• Big cat

It's fall, and I'm standing in my driveway with my Mom. Across the street, way back in my neighbor's acreage, I see a mountain lion.

"Mom. Mom. Mom! MOM!" I shout. "Mountain Lion, look!"

She refused to look until it was much closer, then freaked out and we ran inside with it literally on our heels. A common theme in my nightmares and stress dreams.

• The latest:

I'm playing hide and seek with my husband's stepdad while he cruises along in a van (not the scary part, it was a friendly game. Weird, but apparently normal in the world of the dream). We end up at a park that is supposedly haunted by a monster. There are circle little paintings of a purple face and the eyes and smile of Hugo Weaving in this pic:

We get to the bottom of a very steep hill where there's a dilapidated carriage house/covered bridge. We can see inside: just some benches and graffiti. A girl comes out screaming 'He's in there!' and runs away. We laugh and head in.

Inside, under the bench, a figure is crouched. It's this, but with the aforementioned face, and about eight feet tall and purple.

Sans ocean and feels.

We took off up the hill, but I feel behind. The thing grabbed me with it's claws a few times, but we escaped into the van. We drove away, totally freaked out, knowing no one would ever believe us. I started panicking, knowing I was going to have nightmares and mental scarring forever from the encounter.

When I woke up I was so happy it wasn't real I wasn't even scared anymore. So hooray!

Snowmageddon 2015

Well, after fun in the sun in Florida, we've come back to a crazy Michigan snowstorm. Seems right.

It's not so bad: my awesome uncle has a plow and dug us out. Today it seems warmer: the icicles on the gutters are dripping away. We only got stuck in the driveway once!

I'm ready to be a snowbird now. Can I retire 40 years early?

No, no...well, sorta.

At least I have ten more minutes to sit and relax before braving the snow and heading into work. Never have I been so glad to work only five minutes from the house.

Florida Trip, Day 6 & 7

Our last two days in Florida were wonderful: we spent time on the beach, FiL took us to a great BBQ place, and we watched movies until the ripe hour of 10pm. Then I crashed, only to get up at 4:30 for an uneventful flight home.

It was an amazing trip. I just wish I didn't have to wait a year to see my FiL and the rest of the family down there again. 

Florida Trip, Day 5

2nd to last day in Florida, and boy are we doing a lot!

First, we had breakfast at the suburb club. Then we went to the McKee Botanical Gardens with our Trival-Pursuit playing friend. It was AWESOME! Aside from the abundance of flora, we saw lizards and a traveling Lego sculpture exhibit!

Then we had lunch a Mulligan's Bar and Grill. The seafood Bisque and Mahi sandwich were AMAZING!

Now we're back at the house, resting before more karaoke at the Tiki bar tonight. I am bushed!

The Tiki bar was epic. We got peel n eat shrimp. Hubby and I backed FiL on Hallelujah. Amazing! Then back to the house for leftover Mahi sandwich, and Friends. Another day in paradise.
