On the 2nd Blog of Christmas...

...I started watching Christmas movies!

Now, I love Christmas movies. Not the old-tyme classics like It's a Wonderful Life (ugh) or White Christmas (noise of indifference since I haven't seen it), but contemporary things, like Die Hard, Gremlins, and The Santa Clause.

Though the last is somehow the most questionable choice.

There's also a rich tradition of...not so great Christmas classics. Things like Magic Christmas Tree:

The 12 Days of Christmas (starring Phil Hartman. Seriously):

And...this:

Much like bad horror movies, bad Christmas movies have a certain charm. They're silly and goofy and full of cheese. I've saved up a few choice morsels to share with loved ones as the holidays go on, but it's not hard to find your own examples. I only draw the line at 'life affirming'/Lifetime style releases. I don't need to see an angel going to earth and falling in love, or a battered woman falling in love, or a loveless couple falling in love again all in time for Christmas.

Christmas, aside from being about Christ, is definitely a time to spread joy and be with loved ones. And my favorite way to do both is by laughing at something cheesy. And eating cheese, probably. Mmm.

So, as we go into that cold Christmas night, warm yourself with cheese and laughter. Unless you're my lactose intolerant brother in law. Then skip right to the mulled cider.

Happy Holidays!

Monthly Horror Shorts: Halloween Left-Overs

Here's a round-up of short scary stories culled from r/ShortScaryStories (and other places if I can find them) that didn't make the October cut. Enjoy! All credit to the actual authors, yadda yadda yadda.

On the first day of Christmas...

...I brought my blog back to liiiiife!

Sorry for the November hiatus, folks. I had a few other projects that needed doing, and after Blogtober I was a little burned out. But now the holidays are upon us, and I can once again start talking about what's going on.

First, yes, I saw Thor Ragnarok and Justice League. I prefer Thor overall, but there were a few nice moments in Justice League with smiling Superman, Aqua-Mamoa, and that nice Jewish boy.

As of this writing I haven't seen the Infinity War trailer. I'm trying to wait and see it in a theater.

As for non-pop culture, HOLY SHIT EVERYBODY'S GETTING FIRED, NO WHITE DUES GOT NOMINATED FOR BEST GRAMMY, AND I'M NOT TOUCHING POLITICS HERE.

So, more blogs are coming. Thanks for coming back with me.

Horror Story Mega Post

Here's a MASSIVE compilation of horror stories from Reddit. These are mostly long-form stories. Please note: some of these things are graphic. There are warnings at the top of most of the stories where that applies. Read at your discretion.

Enjoy!

I'm starting with the "Aunt Carol" stories by redditor demons_dance_alone. This series is part sci-fi/supernatural horror, part every day horror. If you have a family member who is a narcissist, or otherwise ruins things for everyone, you'll really enjoy this series.

There's a lot of individual stories, but they're all pretty short. It's worth the read.
  1. The Mugwump that came to Thanksgiving
  2. My Very Worst Thanksgiving
  3. Getting rid of Aunt Carol
  4. My mother's prom disaster
  5. Carol's Divorce
  6. Carol ruins Christmas
  7. Carol snatches kids
  8. Carol's dog
  9. Carol the church-hopper
  10. Carol drags Bob down with her
  11. Carol begins
  12. Carol comes back 1: extinction burst
  13. Carol comes back 2: war party
  14. Carol comes back 3:
The rest of these are mostly 1 shot stories, with a few 2 or 3 parters. Enjoy!

Halloweekend

So, this is the big party weekend of the year. Or in my case the big work on Saturday and hang out with family while trying to find time for Stranger Things Season 2 weekend of the year. My annual Halloween movie night had to be pushed back to the weekend after. A decision I loath, but it's better than no viewing party at all.

Frankly, this has been a less than stellar October for me. Most of my friends were occupied all month long by a play I wasn't in (I'm in a different play), making get-togethers all but impossible. So far I've squeezed in a viewing of Hocus Pocus with some friends who hadn't seen it before.

I know!

I've also finished re-watching American Horror Story: Freak Show with my husband, who has been very understanding during the month. He's generally lukewarm to horror, as he doesn't get scared.

There was this one time, however...

But he's willing to watch stuff with a genuinely good story. So things like AHS, Krampus, Get Out, and the like get a pass.

That still leaves me alone when it comes to sagas and cheese fests. Who will sit with me and watch the Puppet Master series? Or lesser classics like Pumpkinhead and Wishmaster? Or the godawful not-even-really-a-horror-movie The Last Shark?

Luckily, with Rifftrax, you're never alone.

I'm sad I haven't been able to properly celebrate and enjoy this Halloween season. Thank goodness for these blogs. And a special shout-out to my over 800 (!) followers on the Amino Horror App. It's nice to know I'm not shouting into the void, or worse, just annoying friends and family.

Anyway, for those of you who can, have fun this weekend. I'll be back next week for the last of the thrills.

The Twisted Ones (Spoiler free)

So, at long last, my hotly awaited review of The Twisted Ones.

*cricket noise*

I reviewed the first FNAF book, The Silver Eyes a while back. It was...fine. At worst, it was a mediocre Goosebumps novel, and at best, it was a better Goosebumps novel.

Not a lot of blood, but it had a few scares (very few), and characters that had more dimensionality than wet carboard. Most importantly, it fleshed out some of the lore of FNAF, which was all I really wanted.

Enter The Twisted ones, the middle of the trilogy (as Scott Cawthon has stated). Charlie, the survivor girl, is dealing with the fallout from book 1, while new murders crop up.

Some perpetrated by this thing!

This book is an improvement on The Silver eyes. There's more deaths, more gruesome imagery, and several new twists that are enjoyable to read.

The book does end on a cliffhanger, though, with nothing really tied up at the end. Cawthon has stated there is a third book in the works, but this book suffers a lot for not tying up anything. I get that a trilogy midpoint is there to set up the third installment, but you've got to tie up SOME things, or it just feels like a 'screw you' to the audience.

No word at this time on when the third book will be published, or even it's title. I'm sure I'll pick it up (this installment was only $5, and worth at least that), but I just wish there were any answers in this one, and not just a lot of set ups.

It is very FNAF to leave us with more questions, though...

And in liue of answers, here's another piece of Twisted Chica fanart. It's scarier than the book.
